“I noticed that I was prone to it at a young age, because I started getting receding hairline early on. But fortunately, the process was slow. When I was in my late twenties, I decided to do something about it.” He went to the doctor once, who recommended minoxidil. “But I didn't like that. It caused redness and flaking.”
So he had to do some research. "There is a lot of information out there. The tricky thing about these products is that you have to use them for a long time before you know if they work. So it took a while before I found what worked for me."
The best treatment for Kai
He eventually settled on the following treatment, which works best for him:
What he means by finding the right treatment is mainly ease of use for him. "Neofollics lotion makes my hair a little too greasy, so I can't get my hair dry. But I do feel that it works. That's why I use that lotion in the evening. Then my hair can be a little greasy. In the morning, I use Foligain with the trioxidil formula."
Ease of use
"For me, it's a trade-off between drying time in the morning and styling my hair. Ease of use is important. That's also my advice to others. Find what works best for you."
Using a derma roller was a bit daunting at first. "Yes, it's not very pleasant, of course. But I only do it twice a week, so it's not too bad."
Kai has also been using the Theradome laser helmet for five months now. "That laser helmet is the easiest to use. I put it on twice a week. Just in the evening on the sofa. I think it might be too early to say whether it really works, but I'm going to keep using it."
He also uses hair fibres. "I like to use them to cover the crown a little bit." It's getting a bit thinner there now. That's why he's now looking into hair transplants. "I'm looking into options in the Netherlands. I've already had discussions with a clinic and I want to do it this year or next year. Then I don't think I'll need to use hair fibres anymore. Of course, I will continue to use the products. A hair transplant doesn't solve that."
He is satisfied with ordering from Hairgivers. He already ordered from them when we were still called Hair Growth Specialist. "I like that there is a lot of information available. When the colour of the hair fibres didn't quite match my own hair colour, they sent me a different colour free of charge."
Advice
Does Kai have any advice for others? "What I want to tell people is that you shouldn't wait too long to make a decision. It's important to decide quickly whether you're going to tackle your hair loss. Waiting too long is not good. It's also wise not to dwell on it too much."
